Part of 1Xtra’s Stories…MC’s, rappers and poets use music and rhyme to reflect on last August’s rioting. Presenter Twin B takes us on a tour of Tottenham to see how the area is recovering from the destruction of last summer. We talk to Londoners that suffered as well as those that rioted, while other young people use rhyme to vent their feelings on the unrest. Heading north, local Grime MC C4 takes us round Birmingham City Centre to revisit the chaotic scenes last year. We’re then welcomed to Manchester by dubstep and grime outfit Virus Syndicatewho’ve written a club banger especially for the programme.

Finger pointing is kept to a minimum – instead, music and rhyme is created from a generation that wants to be heard. Other major contributions include; an interview with Lady Leshurr,  Genesis Elijah and his powerful spoken word response to the trouble; Exclusive tracks from DRS (Broke N’English) and Zed Bias, created in their Salford studio while looters roamed outside, a specially written poem from Rapper and Poet RTkal and music from the young members of Spectrum Music Project in East London.

Urban Rhymes broadcasts on Sunday 29th July at 9pm on BBC Radio 1Xtra.

TBI would like to thank Marvin Nuro for his help on this programme.
